Luxor: Ancient Egypt’s Modern Day Open-Air Museum

Often referred to as the world's greatest open-air museum, Luxor is a destination where ancient history comes alive around every corner. Nestled on both banks of the Nile River, Luxor is home to some of the most impressive archaeological sites in Egypt—and arguably, the world.

On the East Bank, the city comes to life with children on their way to school and parents on their way to work, markets open, and coffee shops hold early morning coffee drinkers and shisha smokers. Here you’ll find Luxor Temple, beautifully lit at night, and the sprawling Karnak Temple Complex, which once served as the religious heart of ancient Thebes. Karnak is home to the Great Hypostyle Hall—an unforgettable forest of massive stone columns etched with hieroglyphics. Connecting the two temples is the recently restored Avenue of Sphinxes, a ceremonial pathway nearly two miles long.

Across the Nile on the West Bank, the atmosphere shifts into something much different, it is quieter, more spiritual, and peaceful. Here lie the tombs of pharaohs in the Valley of the Kings, the elegant Temple of Hatshepsut, and the silent guardians known as the Colossi of Memnon. It’s where sunrise hot air balloon rides offer a magical view of temples and tombs from above.

Whether you’re a first-time visitor or returning for more, Luxor never fails to impress. It's a must for history lovers, spiritual travelers, and anyone who wants to feel the heartbeat of ancient Egypt.
